We're an Australian family who made the move. This isn't a guide written from a desk — it's everything we wish we'd known before we left. Panama offers a cost of living 40–55% lower than Australia, year-round warmth, and one of the most welcoming expat communities in Latin America.
Australia has one of the highest costs of living in the world — Sydney and Melbourne consistently rank in the global top 10 most expensive cities. Panama offers a comparable quality of life at a fraction of the cost. A family spending $12,000 AUD/month in Sydney can live equally well in Panama City for $5,000–$6,000 AUD/month.
Panama is also one of the few countries in Latin America where English is widely spoken in expat communities, international schools teach Australian-aligned curricula, and the legal and banking systems are stable and transparent.
Australia is on Panama's Friendly Nations list, which means Australians have access to one of the fastest and most straightforward residency pathways available — the Friendly Nations Visa.
| Expense | Panama City | Sydney / Melbourne |
|---|---|---|
| 2-bed apartment (city) | ~$1,250–$2,200 AUD/mo | $3,200–$5,500 AUD/mo |
| Groceries (couple/month) | ~$460–$700 AUD | $1,000–$1,600 AUD |
| Restaurant meal (2 people) | ~$31–$62 AUD | $80–$160 AUD |
| Private health insurance | ~$230–$460 AUD/mo | $250–$600 AUD/mo |
| Domestic worker (full-time) | ~$620–$930 AUD/mo | Not typical |
| Cinema ticket | ~$9–$12 AUD | $22–$28 AUD |
Australia taxes its residents on worldwide income. Once you become a non-resident for tax purposes (generally after leaving Australia permanently), you are only taxed on Australian-sourced income (e.g., rental income, Australian investments). Panama taxes only Panama-sourced income — so most Australians living in Panama and earning remotely pay very little tax in either country.
Superannuation can generally be accessed at preservation age (60+) and transferred to a Panamanian bank account. Speak with an Australian tax adviser before leaving to understand your specific obligations around residency status and super access.
Homeschooling is legal in Panama and widely practised by expat families. Australian curriculum resources (ACARA-aligned) are available online, and the Pathway Unlocked portal includes a full homeschooling guide covering legal requirements, curriculum options, and the expat homeschooling community in Panama. Many Australian families find the homeschooling lifestyle in Panama — with access to nature, culture, and travel — far richer than what they left behind.
Boquete — the most popular destination for Australian families who want a slower pace, cooler climate, and a strong homeschooling community. The highland lifestyle feels surprisingly similar to rural Australia.
Panama City (Punta Pacífica, San Francisco) — preferred by families who want international schooling options, city convenience, and easy flights home (via Los Angeles or Dallas).
Coronado — a Pacific beach community popular with Australian families who want space, a pool, and beach access without full city living.
Our portal covers visas, banking, schooling, healthcare, and a step-by-step move planner — written by us, for families like yours.
